The bus service in Bosnia is quite good; more or less any small village can be reach by bus. Also there are a large number of international connections to most countries in Western Europe. Bus service is fairly cheap and a good alternative to other means of transportation.
Tickets, and Bus companies: Unfortunately it is not yet generally possible to buy tickets online, so in most cases you will have to buy the ticket at the local bus station or on the bus, in the summer it is advisable to buy ticket even one day before, especially if you are travelling to popular destinations. If you buy ticket on the bus, make sure that you get a receipt printed by a machine if one available. The intercity bus routes in Bosnia are operated by private bus companies, on the schedule it is stated which bus company operates the route. The quality and service level may vary depending on the bus company, but generally speaking, most Buses in Bosnia are in fairly good condition.
Prices: As mention above travelling with bus is fairly cheap in Bosnia, a list of approximate ticket prices between the most popular bosnian cities you can find here. And prices for international buses you can find here. Return ticket with same bus company are in most cases discounted, a discounted price also apply to student, children and pensioner ticket.
Bus stations: In all larger cities you will find a main bus stations from where the intercity buses departure, the train station is normally within walking distance of the bus station. If you have to catch a bus on a smaller station, you might find the bus is to full to accept you, to avoid that, it is advisable to check a day before how many is on the same departure, if it looks to be full, consider going to nearest major city and take bus from the there.

The journey on the bus: As mention above most intercity buses are in good condition, and equipped with amenities like air-condition. If you suffer from car sickness, you might want to take a pill before the trip as the roads are curvy and not in all to good conditions. Remember to bring water and a book for the trip, a pillow can also be recommended. The long distance buses normally stops by a restaurant on the way.
Seating: On longer trips (e.g. international buses) it is possible to buy ticket with an allocated seat, ask when you buy the ticket. Once you get on the bus you might find you seat taken, so just look for a free seat and take that one. In case the bus is completely full, and you bought a ticked with allocated seat, you should address the driver or co-driver, normally they will arrange for a seat especially if you are travelling a long distance.
Luggage: I you have luggage for the hold, you will have to pay 1-3 Km (Convertible Marka) depending on bus company, so make sure to have some coins ready, the driver / attendant will attach a small strip with a number to your suitcase, you will get the counterpart of the strip, keep it just in case.
Bringing bicycle on the bus: If the bus hold is not full, you can normally take your bike for a surcharge, there is although not guarantee that you will find space for your Bike. If you are travelling more people with bikes, it is advisable to contact the bosnian bus company in due time to see if they can make some special arrangement for the bikes.
